Riot Games has released a significant development update for its upcoming fighting game, 2XKO, confirming that the team is "doubling down" on core genre elements. With the development team fully focused on production, the update outlines three primary pillars: duo play, core gameplay mechanics, and community competitive programs.
Local Duo Mode a Top Priority
Responding to player feedback regarding accessibility, developers are currently prototyping a Local Duo Mode. This feature is designed to enable couch co-op gameplay, allowing two players on the same team to play together locally against the world. The studio has flagged this as a top priority and is working to implement it as quickly as possible.
Gameplay Philosophy and Balance
Addressing community concerns about the game's direction, the update firmly established that the skill ceiling will remain high. The developers emphasized that the fast-paced nature of the title allows for player creativity and reaction to shine, and they intend to preserve this identity.
While the core philosophy remains intact, balance changes are incoming to address outliers in the meta. Specifically, the team acknowledged that champions like Yasuo and Ekko are performing exceptionally well at the highest levels, and their defined weaknesses need to be made more apparent. The goal remains to ensure every character has clear strengths and counter-play opportunities.
Supporting the Competitive Scene
The 2026 competitive schedule is already in motion, with the next Challenger event taking place at Genesis X3. Beyond major events, Riot is launching a program to support local Tournament Organizers (TOs). This initiative aims to provide local events with access to exclusive in-game prizing that cannot be earned elsewhere. The objective is to equip smaller organizers with tools to expand their reach and reward players for engaging with their local fighting game communities. Testing for this program is scheduled to begin shortly, followed by an application process for interested TOs.
Technical Fixes and Future Content
On the technical front, the team is actively investigating reports of screen tearing on console versions and is working on a future update to resolve the issue. They are also monitoring the Ranked system to ensure fair matchmaking.
The update concluded with a teaser regarding two upcoming champions, noting that reveals are currently a work in progress.
