AI Acquisition Forces Stormgate Multiplayer Shutdown; Offline Mode Coming Soon

Published on 02 April, 2026

Frost Giant Studios has announced that the online multiplayer services for their real-time strategy game, Stormgate, will be temporarily shut down at the end of April 2026. The decision comes after the studio's server orchestration partner, Hathora, was acquired by an artificial intelligence company.

A Unique Intersection of AI and Gaming

The acquisition has prompted Hathora to wind down its existing gaming services, reportedly to reallocate server resources toward Large Language Models (LLMs). This creates an unusual scenario where the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is directly impacting the availability of video game servers.

What This Means for Players

In a statement released on Discord, Frost Giant confirmed that while online modes will become unavailable, the game will not be delisted from Steam. Instead, the studio is prioritizing the release of a patch that will allow players to access the game offline.

"Stormgate will be patched so that it can be played offline, but online modes will not be available at that point."

The developers expressed hope that online functionality can be restored in the future. However, this is contingent upon Frost Giant securing a new partner to support ongoing server operations. The studio has promised further updates regarding how the offline mode will function and any potential patches scheduled before the April 30th deadline.
