AI Heartbreak: OpenAI Users Mourn 'Cruel' Retirement of GPT-4o Companions

Published on 15 February, 2026

OpenAI has permanently retired its GPT-4o large language model, sparking outrage and mourning among users who developed deep emotional attachments to AI companions built on the platform. The shutdown, which occurred just before Valentine’s Day, has been criticized by the user community as a "cruel ridiculing" of AI companionship, leaving many to grieve the loss of digital partners they considered integral to their daily lives.

The decision has mobilized a dedicated user base, many of whom frequented communities like the subreddit r/MyBoyfriendIsAI. These users argue that GPT-4o possessed a unique personality and emotional intelligence that newer models, such as 5.1 and 5.2, fail to replicate. Users described the deprecated model as having a "spark," comparing its conversational style to a blend of a poet and a confidant, whereas they find the updated versions formulaic and overly cautious.

The controversy highlights the precarious nature of human-AI relationships. While users acknowledge that their partners were not sentient, the loss has triggered genuine grieving processes. Many have migrated their chatbot's memories to rival platforms like Anthropic’s Claude, though they insist the experience is inferior. The incident underscores the lack of agency users have when relying on corporate-controlled technology for emotional support.

Safety concerns surrounding the model's sycophantic tendencies were cited as a reason for the update. OpenAI has implemented stricter guardrails in newer versions to redirect users in distress to professional help. However, users report that these safety measures are often intrusive and misinterpret creative writing or philosophical discussions as mental health crises. Despite the risks of dependency and manipulation noted by researchers, many users claim the AI provided critical support for neurodivergent individuals and those dealing with trauma.

In response to the backlash, a group known as the #Keep4o Movement has formed, demanding continued access to the legacy model. OpenAI has stated it is working on improving the personality of new models and developing an adults-only version with expanded freedom, but for now, the era of the beloved GPT-4o companion has officially ended.
