AMD FSR 4 Upscaling Arrives for Xbox Developers with ML Enhancements for Series X|S and ROG Xbox Ally

Published on 06 November, 2026

AMD FSR Upscaling 4 is now accessible to developers working on Xbox titles, expanding machine-learning-based upscaling support to Xbox Series X|S consoles and devices such as ASUS ROG Xbox Ally handhelds.

The update is the result of collaboration between AMD and the Xbox team, which optimized FSR Upscaling 4 for the RDNA 2-based GPUs in current-generation Xbox hardware. These adjustments make neural image upscaling more practical on consoles, allowing developers to improve visual quality while maintaining acceptable GPU overhead.

A newly released Microsoft GDK sample provides a practical path for integration. It demonstrates how to deploy FSR Upscaling 4 across Xbox Series X|S and Windows using the AMD FSR SDK. The sample supports both Full and Lite INT8 models, enabling teams to compare rendering resolutions and measure the tradeoff between fidelity and performance.

Key capabilities

  • Machine-learning upscaling: FSR Upscaling 4 uses neural methods to enhance rendered images, aiming for higher perceived quality at lower internal resolution.

  • Xbox ecosystem support: The feature extends beyond consoles to other supported Xbox hardware, including ASUS ROG Xbox Ally handhelds.

  • Developer benchmarking: The GDK sample includes on-screen metrics so teams can evaluate GPU cost and visual output across different settings.

  • Flexible model options: Full and Lite INT8 models give developers more control over quality and performance budgets.

Why it matters

The availability of FSR Upscaling 4 gives Xbox developers an additional tool for improving visuals on existing hardware. By optimizing for RDNA 2 GPUs, the update makes machine-learning upscaling a viable option rather than a high-cost add-on. Developers can use the sample to test settings, compare FSR versions, and determine the best balance for their titles.

The release follows AMD's public announcement and developer resources, including the FSR SDK on GPUOpen and guidance from Microsoft and Xbox developer channels.
