Anthropic, the AI startup renowned for its safety-first approach, announced on Tuesday a major revision to its internal guidelines. The company is moving away from binding safety commitments in favor of a more flexible "Frontier Safety Roadmap." This shift marks a departure from its "Responsible Scaling Policy," established two years ago, which mandated a pause in model training if AI capabilities outstripped the company's ability to control them.
Under the new framework, these strict limits have been removed, replaced by public goals that the company intends to grade itself against. In a blog post, Anthropic explained that continuing to pause while "less careful actors plowed ahead" was counterproductive. Company officials argue that the original policy, designed to encourage an industry-wide "race to the top," ultimately left them at a disadvantage in a market where competitors are accelerating development.
Pentagon Pressure and Political Climate
The policy announcement arrives during a contentious period for the company regarding government relations. According to reports, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently issued an ultimatum to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. The Pentagon reportedly threatened to revoke a $200 million contract and designate the company as a supply chain risk unless specific AI safeguards were rolled back.
While Anthropic clarifies that the policy update is unrelated to the Pentagon discussions, the timing highlights the conflicting pressures facing AI developers. Despite the pressure, Anthropic has reportedly refused to compromise on two specific issues: the development of AI-controlled weapons and mass domestic surveillance of American citizens.
A Pragmatic Shift
Founded by former OpenAI members concerned about the dangers of artificial intelligence, Anthropic has long branded itself as the "AI company with a soul." The decision to loosen guardrails signals a pragmatic shift in strategy. As Washington's political climate turns increasingly anti-regulation, and global competition intensifies, the company is prioritizing rapid iteration and market presence over its previous doctrine of unilateral constraint.
