Anthropic’s artificial intelligence assistant, Claude, has claimed the top spot on Apple’s chart of free U.S. apps. The milestone arrives just one day after the Trump administration announced efforts to block government agencies from adopting the startup's technology, creating a wave of public interest that seemingly boosted the app's popularity.
The sudden rise in rankings follows a contentious back-and-forth regarding the ethical limitations placed on Anthropic’s models. The company recently refused to allow its technology to be utilized for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. In response, President Donald Trump criticized the decision on Truth Social, accusing the company of obstructing the Department of War.
National Security Implications
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has reportedly moved to designate Anthropic as a supply-chain risk to national security. This classification would effectively bar U.S. defense contractors from utilizing the company's tools. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei addressed the situation in a statement, acknowledging the Department's authority to select aligned contractors while expressing hope that they would reconsider given the substantial value the technology offers to the armed forces.
Record Growth and Market Competition
The controversy appears to have driven consumer interest to new heights. Data from analytics firm Sensor Tower indicates that Claude climbed from the 131st spot in late January to the top of the charts, displacing competitors. An Anthropic spokesperson confirmed that free user counts have increased by over 60% since January, with daily sign-ups tripling since November.
Historically, the AI chatbot market has been dominated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which held the No. 1 spot for most of February and currently sits at No. 2, followed by Google’s Gemini at No. 4. While OpenAI recently struck a deployment agreement with the Defense Department, Anthropic’s refusal to compromise on specific ethical guardrails has seemingly resonated with a growing segment of the consumer market, resulting in record-breaking subscription numbers for the startup.
