Bethesda Takes Cautious Stance on AI, Prioritizing Human Creativity for Future Titles

Bethesda Game Studios executive Todd Howard has clarified the company's position on artificial intelligence, stating the development team is "incredibly cautious" regarding its implementation. In a recent interview with The Kinda Funny Gamescast, Howard emphasized that while the technology cannot be ignored, it will not be used to generate content for major upcoming projects like The Elder Scrolls 6.


Protecting Artistic Intention


The studio head stressed the importance of human creativity, noting that AI lacks the essential element of "artistic intention" that defines Bethesda's work. Howard explained that while the studio acknowledges the rapid evolution of tech models, they view AI primarily as an analytical tool rather than a creative engine.


"We're not using it to generate anything," Howard stated. He added that human intention is what makes creative works special, and that remains the studio's priority.


Utility in Data Analysis


While generative content is currently off the table for creative purposes, Howard confirmed that AI plays a role in handling "big data tasks." The technology is being utilized to analyze long-term player data and assist with coding productivity. By automating time-consuming technical processes, the developers hope to free up more time to focus on the creative aspects of game design.


This cautious approach aligns with a wider industry trend where studios are weighing the benefits of efficiency against the value of human artistry. Recently, Larian Studios and Games Workshop have also taken steps to limit the use of Generative AI, aiming to protect the distinct quality and employment of human workers.


Howard also revealed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is currently playable using an overhauled Creation Engine 3, marking a significant milestone in the title's development cycle.
