A 20-year-old employee at a Georgia Best Buy has been arrested for allegedly enabling a large-scale theft of electronics valued at more than $40,000. The incident, reported by local CBS News, highlights the persistent challenges retailers face regarding internal theft amid economic pressures.
According to police reports, the employee, identified as Dorian Allen, allowed shoplifters to exit the store without paying for approximately 140 items. Surveillance footage revealed that Allen not only permitted the theft but also assisted the individuals in loading merchandise into their vehicles.

The stolen goods list reads like a gamer's wish list, comprising dozens of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S consoles. Thieves also made off with Meta Quest VR headsets, high-end PCs, AirPods, Beats wireless headphones, wireless controllers, and a Segway.
Allegations of Cyber-Blackmail
Upon being charged, Allen provided a defense claiming he was a victim of extortion. He alleged that a hacker group had threatened to release nude photos he had shared on Instagram unless he cooperated with their shoplifting operation. Asserting that he was under duress, Allen stated he memorized the descriptions of the shoplifters to ensure he was the one to facilitate their exit.

This event follows warnings from the National Retail Foundation regarding a spike in employee theft. The organization noted that high turnover rates and inflation have increased stress on retail staff, creating vulnerabilities for fraud. Managers at the Georgia location reportedly called police only after Allen had been assisting the ring for several weeks without detection.
