Claude Overtakes ChatGPT on App Store Following OpenAI's Pentagon Partnership

Published on 01 March, 2026

Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude, has claimed the number one spot on the Apple App Store’s productivity chart, driven by a significant migration of users from OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The shift comes in the wake of OpenAI’s announcement that it has secured an agreement with the US Department of Defense to deploy its AI models on classified networks.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the partnership on X, emphasizing that the deal includes strict adherence to safety principles. specifically regarding human oversight of autonomous weapons and limitations on mass surveillance. Despite these assurances, the move has sparked controversy among the AI community, with many users questioning the ethical implications of military integration.

User Backlash and Migration

The reaction was immediate across social media platforms. High-profile figures, including pop musician Katy Perry, publicly shared their decision to switch to Claude, while Reddit forums dedicated to ChatGPT saw dozens of threads encouraging account deletions. The phrase "Cancel ChatGPT" trended as users expressed discomfort with what they view as a crossed ethical line.

As a result, Claude has capitalized on the public relations vacuum, converting dissatisfied ChatGPT subscribers into new paying customers.

Conflicting Narratives on Military Ties

While OpenAI faces criticism, some users have pointed out that Anthropic is not entirely absent from the defense sector. Anthropic previously established a partnership with Palantir and Amazon Web Services to provide Claude models to US intelligence and defense agencies.

Furthermore, the political landscape has played a role in the rivalry. Reports indicate that the Trump administration has directed federal agencies to phase out Anthropic's technology, with the Secretary of Defense designating the company as a supply chain risk. Anthropic has stated it will challenge this designation in court.

OpenAI has since published specific contract language ensuring that its AI systems will not independently direct autonomous weapons or be used for the unconstrained surveillance of US persons. Despite these clarifications, the perceived advantage in the "chatbot wars" has temporarily shifted toward Anthropic.
