Darktide Unveils 'Expeditions' Mode: A High-Risk Journey Beyond Hive Tertium

A New Frontier Beyond the Hive

Fatshark has revealed details regarding 'Expeditions,' the most significant content addition to Warhammer 40,000: Darktide since its launch. In this upcoming mode, players will finally exit the confines of Hive Tertium to explore the dangerous wastes beyond, scavenging for valuable Tech-Remnants while managing radiation and hostile forces.

The core of Expeditions revolves around a 'high risk, high reward' structure. Players will embark on runs lasting between ten to thirty minutes through randomized environments. Instead of following a linear path, squads can choose their own routes through 'Scavenge Zones,' identifying Sites of Interest using an upgraded Auspex scanner.

Strategic Extraction and Progression

A defining feature of the new mode is the extraction mechanic. As players collect Tech-Remnants, they must decide whether to extract early with their loot or push deeper for greater rewards. If time runs out or the team dies, all collected resources are lost. Successfully extracted Remnants contribute to a global progression system, unlocking new Grid Points on an Expedition map and accessing higher difficulty modifiers.

Designed to accommodate varying play schedules, the mode allows for flexible session lengths. As Design Director Victor explained, players can opt to leave early with their haul, making it accessible for those with limited time.

Dynamic Environments and New Threats

The open terrain outside the Hive introduces new tactical considerations. Unlike the claustrophobic corridors of the Hive City, the open maps allow enemies to attack from all directions, including long-range snipers. Players can utilize 'Sanctuaries' found between zones to heal, resupply, and purchase new tools, such as support fire from a Valkyrie.

Enemy spawns are no longer strictly linear. The development team has revamped the 'main path' system to account for player-driven pacing and actions. Furthermore, the mode features roaming threats, including the newly introduced Ogryn Pack Master and Armoured Pox Hounds. Players are encouraged to adapt their loadouts for open warfare, moving away from close-quarters horde-clearing builds.

Expeditions will be available midway through a character's progression journey, running parallel to the existing Adventure mode.
