Digital Extremes has marked a major milestone for its flagship title Warframe, confirming the game’s arrival on Nintendo Switch 2 and detailing the new "Shadowgrapher" update. During a panel at PAX East, Community Director Megan Everett highlighted the studio's continued expansion, the development of its new fantasy title Soulframe, and a firm stance against the integration of generative AI in game development.
Warframe Arrives on Nintendo Switch 2
The free-to-play sci-fi shooter officially launched on Nintendo’s latest hardware on March 25, bringing the entirety of the game’s 13-year history to the portable console. According to Everett, the transition was relatively smooth due to the architectural similarities between the Switch generations. The team had to postpone the release from the 2025 holiday season to ensure quality alongside the "The Old Peace" update.
The new port features enhanced visuals and frame rates, along with support for the Switch 2 Joy-Con mouse functionality. Everett noted that the developers are actively adjusting mouse sensitivity settings based on early player feedback to optimize the experience.
The Shadowgrapher Update and Follie's Hunt
The latest content drop introduces Follie, a new character who wields ink and paint in combat. Alongside this character comes a limited-time asymmetric game mode, "Follie's Hunt." Unlike traditional 4v1 multiplayer experiences like Dead by Daylight, this mode pits a team of four players against an invincible, AI-controlled Follie.
Everett explained that making the antagonist invulnerable was a necessary design choice to balance against the immense power of veteran players who have optimized their builds over the last decade. The mode reimagines the Vesper Relay, a long-standing destroyed hub world, as a terrifying arena inspired by classic platformer mechanics.
Soulframe and Studio Synergy
While Warframe continues to dominate the live-service space, Digital Extremes is simultaneously nurturing Soulframe, a medieval fantasy counterpart. Although the development teams are split, Everett emphasized a collaborative environment where technological advancements are shared. If one team develops a significant graphical improvement, it is ported to the other project.
The studio is also navigating the challenge of introducing a tenured player base to a new genre. While Soulframe offers a different vibe, many Warframe supporters have already invested in the new title's Founders program to avoid missing out on exclusive cosmetics, a lesson learned from the original game's 13-year history.
A Strict Human-Only Policy
Addressing a recent controversy regarding generative AI, Everett was unequivocal about the studio's philosophy. During a recent livestream, AI-generated fan art was accidentally showcased, a mistake that Everett described as "devastating." She reiterated that Digital Extremes operates as a "non-AI company." All assets for both Warframe and Soulframe are created by human artists, and the studio has zero tolerance for AI-generated content in its official releases.
