Electronic Arts (EA) has confirmed that BioWare, the developer of Mass Effect, is being closed, a move that forms part of a broader round of workforce reductions across its studio portfolio.
The publisher disclosed the decision in an internal email, according to a report by Vertical Slice, which said the message confirmed BioWare’s closure but did not specify which additional teams would be affected.
Multiple flagship studios reportedly affected
A source told Vertical Slice that Maxis, the developer of The Sims, and Full Circle, the studio behind Skate, were among the teams impacted. Those reports were later echoed by multiple employees who said they had lost their jobs.
A senior creative director at Maxis said their role as Senior Creative Director on The Sims was eliminated in the restructuring. They described the news as disappointing and said they value working with creative, collaborative colleagues, while looking toward future opportunities.
At Full Circle, several staff members, including a seasonal creative director and senior designers, confirmed layoffs on LinkedIn. Ripple Effect, known for work on Battlefield Portal and reported to have been involved in a new Battlefield project, was also said to be affected. Multiple artists and designers publicly stated that their positions were among those cut.
The total number of roles eliminated has not been disclosed. EA was contacted for comment.
