Embark Studios, the developer behind popular titles The Finals and Arc Raiders, has parted ways with co-founder and Chief Creative Officer Rob Runesson. The departure comes in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations and an subsequent external investigation.
According to an official statement from the studio, leadership hired a law firm to conduct an independent investigation after becoming aware of the allegations. While the inquiry reportedly failed to substantiate the claims, Embark described the situation as "unsustainable" and confirmed a mutual agreement for Runesson to leave the company.
Origins of the Allegations
The controversy originated from an anonymous source whose claims were read aloud by streamer Balise roughly a month ago. The allegations, later circulated via public documents, asserted that Runesson engaged in inappropriate behavior with a prominent female streamer. The anonymous accuser suggested the streamer felt pressured to comply due to financial reliance on Runesson's promotion of her content.
IGN later spoke with the streamer implicated in the rumors. While she declined to comment on the record, she indicated that various details circulating in the public domain were misleading or taken out of context.
Broader Community Context
This personnel change occurs alongside a separate controversy involving the The Finals esports community. Multiple male competitive players have recently faced accusations of inappropriate conduct toward women. In response, Embark has paused its outbound esports initiatives to evaluate its competitive systems and ensure proper conduct protocols are in place.
Runesson was a visible figure for the studio, having co-founded Embark alongside former EA DICE veterans. The company maintains that its actions regarding the recent allegations were appropriate and handled with external legal oversight.
