Epic Games recently announced a significant workforce reduction, laying off more than 1,000 employees. The company cited lower-than-expected engagement in Fortnite and broader business struggles as the primary reasons for the mass dismissal. While the financial implications for the company are clear, a specific human tragedy has emerged from the decision.
Among those affected was Michael Prinke, a programmer writer at Epic Games. Prinke is currently fighting terminal brain cancer. Following the layoffs, his wife, Jenni Griffin, took to social media to share the devastating impact of the job loss on their family's battle with the illness.
According to Griffin, the termination of employment has resulted in the immediate loss of Prinke's life insurance benefits. While Epic Games is providing health insurance coverage for the next six months, the life insurance policy was not extended. Griffin explained that because her husband's cancer is classified as a pre-existing condition, finding new coverage is impossible.
Griffin expressed her fear regarding the future, stating that she now faces the reality of planning a funeral and securing a home for her family without the financial safety net the insurance provided. She emphasized that her husband is a father and a person deeply loved, pleading for the message to reach Epic Games' decision-makers.
The appeal suggests that had the human impact been fully understood by leadership, protections might have been put in place for employees in critical situations. The family is currently seeking support as they navigate this dual tragedy.
