Factorio 2.1 stable launch
Factorio's 2.1 update has reached stable status after a lengthy experimental run that lasted through the summer. The release also coincides with the two-year mark for the Space Age expansion. The developers described the update as a polish-focused milestone rather than a content-heavy expansion.
The new build does not center on additional planets, hostile units, or research trees. Its focus is instead on convenience features, small systems, visual improvements, and deferred work from the 2.0 cycle.
Space logistics improve
Space platforms remain the core of late-game play, but the update gives them more utility. Rockets can now carry several item types in one launch, reducing unnecessary payloads. Platforms can request supplies from other platforms in orbit, and an empty import slot can draw items from all connected locations, which helps with consumables such as fuel, ammo, and repair packs.
Circuit control has also been expanded. Platforms can manage hub requests through the circuit network, and a new radar universe mode lets planets and platforms share signals on a common channel.
Platform balance changes
Several changes affect platform movement and survivability. Asteroid damage is now tied to remaining asteroid health rather than velocity, making combat more predictable. The hub is more durable and has better resistance, while drag is now calculated from mass instead of width, reducing the advantage of very narrow designs.
Unloading and automation expand
A dedicated unloading bay lets inserters take items from a landing pad into nearby belts, chests, trains, or other supported targets. The bay can be placed in a limited zone around the landing pad, and elevated rails can now run over cargo bays.
The circuit network also received additional options. Circuit reads and writes can be assigned to different wire colors, replacing the old subtraction-based method. Labs can select research through circuit conditions, boilers and heat exchangers can connect for simpler backup power, land mines can act as tripwires or enemy detectors, and pipes can be wired as well, with a new pipe interface.
Quality becomes optional
Space Age can now be played without enabling the Quality component. The Recycler has been moved into a separate mod, while Quality is marked as recommended and remains enabled by default. For players who keep Quality on, the update adds faster locomotives, larger cargo wagons, and fluid wagons. Quality modules are now excluded from asteroid reprocessing, addressing a controversial optimization.
Fluids, machines, and usability fixes
Several long-standing layout issues have been corrected. Pumpjacks and burner miners can now be mirrored, and the drop arrow now shows which belt lane a machine will use in ambiguous cases. Inserters will consistently place items on the input side of splitters, and blueprint flipping no longer changes machine behavior.
Fluid systems also received fixes. Different fluids in pipelines no longer merge unnoticed; the game shows a warning instead. Fluid flow also scales more accurately with high-throughput machines.
Biter expansion redesigned
Biter expansion received a broader review. Biters now build expansion groups that scale with evolution, aiming for stronger threats rather than many small nests. Exploring the map early no longer reduces nearby expansions around the player's base, and biters select more natural positions for new bases.
Graphics refresh
The update includes another major art pass, with new visuals for assembling machines, the oil refinery, the rocket silo, and heat exchangers. A new pump rendering system can connect to fluid wagons even in complicated station layouts, and a diagonal flamethrower turret has been added. Space platforms now show planets in their background.
ARM64 Linux support
A useful technical update is native ARM64 Linux support. This broadens compatibility with Steam Frame, Raspberry Pi headless servers, Asahi Linux on Apple Silicon MacBooks, and some virtual private server hardware.
What players should know before updating
Saves from 2.0 remain loadable, but certain changes, especially the circuit input and output split, may disrupt existing factory designs. Updated saves and blueprints cannot be moved back to 2.0, so backing up important files is advised. Many popular mods were updated during the experimental period, but some may not yet be ready.
