A new contender has entered the racing genre as Fuse Games, a British studio established by former Criterion developers, officially reveals Star Wars: Galactic Racer. The team, comprised of alumni who worked on titles like Burnout and Need for Speed, is pivoting away from modern open-world trends to deliver a focused, track-based arcade experience set in the Star Wars universe.
A Return to Track-Based Roots
In a recent discussion, CEO Matt Webster and Creative Director Kieran Crimmins emphasized their desire to serve players who crave mastery and replayability. While open-world racers have dominated the market, Fuse Games believes there is an underserved audience for high-octane circuit racing where players can perfect their lines and skills.
Webster noted that the decision to pursue a track-based structure was driven by a desire to provide a "modern view" on classic racing. The team aims to combine the familiar thrill of arcade racing with the distinct fantasy of piloting vehicles in the Star Wars galaxy.
Innovative Mechanics and Environmental Strategy
The developers are introducing a unique "two-phase boost system" to differentiate Galactic Racer from its predecessors. The first phase operates as a standard boost, but the second phase, known as the "ramjet," offers immense speed at a cost. Utilizing the ramjet generates significant heat, risking an explosion if managed poorly.
This mechanic ties directly into the track design. For example, on the volcanic planet Lantaana, players must navigate rivers of lava and water. Lava aids in reaching ramjet operating temperatures quickly but accelerates overheating, while water provides a cooling effect. Crimmins explained that this system creates a dynamic racing line that shifts based on the vehicle, its build, and the environment, ensuring no two races feel identical.
A New Studio's Vision
Founded in 2023, Fuse Games sought to mitigate the risks of a new venture by playing to their established strengths: a shared history of creating thrilling racing games. Their prior collaboration with Lucasfilm on projects like the X-Wing VR mission fostered a relationship that made a Star Wars racing title a natural fit.
By focusing on "high consequence, high action" gameplay, Fuse Games aims to deliver a racing experience that honors the legacy of their previous work while introducing fresh innovations to the genre.
