The video game industry is facing a significant retention crisis, with a recent survey indicating that 44% of professionals have considered leaving the sector entirely due to the recent wave of redundancies. Conducted by recruitment firm Skillsearch, the annual Salary & Satisfaction survey gathered responses from 1,000 participants across major global regions, including the UK, Europe, and North America.
The data paints a stark picture of the current employment landscape. Nearly a quarter of respondents (22%) reported being laid off within the past 12 months, while 12% faced redundancy more than a year ago. The primary drivers behind these workforce reductions were identified as reduced investor funding, budget cuts, and a lack of available projects. The UK was cited as the country most heavily impacted by these disruptions.
For those who successfully secured new roles following a layoff, job security remains a major anxiety. Only 27% of re-employed respondents stated they felt secure in their new positions. The time required to find new employment varied greatly, with 19% of job seekers needing between seven to twelve months to land a role. Specific demographics were hit harder than others; art departments, senior roles, and employees with over a decade of experience were listed as the most impacted areas.
The Impact of AI and Future Outlook
Beyond economic instability, the integration of Artificial Intelligence is causing friction within the workforce. Nearly half of the surveyed professionals expressed concern regarding the increased use of AI, with 64% believing it has a negative effect on industry creativity. Respondents cited job security, ethical usage, and the loss of creative authenticity as top worries, despite acknowledging benefits like increased efficiency.
Looking toward 2026, many professionals are actively seeking new opportunities. In the UK specifically, 76% of respondents indicated they are considering hunting for jobs outside the industry. While 53% are open to relocating for higher salaries, concerns regarding job security and the cost of living continue to dictate career decisions.
The survey also provided insights into compensation trends within the UK. Average salaries were reported at approximately 199,833 for C-suite executives, 110,442 for directors, and 30,357 for junior positions, with programming and business operations remaining the highest-paying director-level fields.
