Gears of War: E-Day Crosses 400,000 Sales Across Xbox and Steam
A new report from The Verge says Gears of War: E-Day has sold more than 400,000 copies when Xbox and Steam performance is combined. The information was reported by The Verge's Tom Warren, who noted that the title has maintained a strong presence in Xbox.com's U.S. most-played rankings, where it has stayed in the top 10 since launching about three weeks ago.
A console-exclusive prequel
E-Day is a prequel set roughly 14 years before the original Gears of War. It was announced at this year's June Xbox Showcase and released only for Xbox Series X|S systems, positioning it as a dedicated next-generation console release. The game has also sold on Steam, broadening its player base while the franchise remains tied to Xbox for console distribution.
Sales, engagement, and Game Pass
The sales figure does not make clear whether Microsoft is satisfied with the split between outright purchases and Xbox Game Pass engagement. Warren specifically framed the report around the uncertainty of how happy Xbox may be with the game's sales mix and player activity through its subscription service.
The report also reflects broader industry attention to E-Day's launch reception. Earlier coverage praised the campaign and Horde Siege mode, while some reviewers described The Coalition's entry as a major leap for the series, emphasizing its improved presentation, combat feel, and emotional stakes.
