Microsoft Dismantles Halo Studios and Moves Franchise Under Activision

Microsoft is dismantling Halo Studios, the team formed from former 343 Industries, in a restructuring that includes 268 layoffs and places the future of the Halo franchise under Activision. The move arrives less than two years after Xbox announced the rebrand, which was intended to consolidate the shooter series and refocus development around Master Chief.

The shakeup follows the July release of Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake that received mixed reactions from dedicated fans but helped return the franchise to mainstream attention. The title had been positioned as a stepping stone for a broader Halo revival, but the latest changes suggest a more significant internal reset.

A franchise with high expectations

Halo remains one of Xbox's most recognizable properties. The original trilogy developed by Bungie helped define Xbox Live, popularize console shooters, and build a strong emotional connection with a generation of players. Later entries, including Halo 4 and Halo Infinite, attempted to expand the story and live-service ambitions, but development has been marked by scope, narrative, and audience challenges.

Halo Infinite was designed as an open-ended foundation for future content, combining a campaign with free-to-play multiplayer. Its multiplayer initially had potential to compete with major live-service titles, yet slow seasonal support and difficulty in retaining players limited its momentum. The campaign, meanwhile, tried to address the psychological aftermath of previous Halo events while reintroducing Master Chief as a more complex figure.

Why the change matters

The consolidation under Activision signals that Microsoft is attempting to stabilize the franchise after repeated resets. For longtime fans, the decision may feel like a break with earlier hopes that the rebrand would produce a consistent and confident roadmap. The latest restructuring suggests Microsoft now sees a new creative direction and organizational home as necessary to move forward.

Halo's future will be shaped by how the next team navigates the series' legacy, its evolving narrative, and a competitive market increasingly dominated by long-running live-service games. The immediate outcome is clear: after a period of renewed investment, the franchise is being handed to a different structure and leadership.
