A Major Milestone for Co-Op Gaming
Hazelight Studios, the Swedish game developer renowned for specializing in cooperative experiences, has reached a significant career milestone. The company recently announced that its combined game sales have surpassed 50 million units. This figure consolidates the studio's position as a leader in the co-op genre.
The sales breakdown reveals a clear standout among the studio's three-title portfolio. It Takes Two leads the charge with an impressive 30 million copies sold over five years. The studio’s debut title, A Way Out, has reached 13 million sales since its release eight years ago. Meanwhile, their most recent offering, Split Fiction, achieved seven million sales within just one year of launch.
Rapid Success for Latest Release
Split Fiction has proven to be the studio's fastest-selling project to date. Upon its release on March 6 of the previous year, the title managed to sell one million copies in merely 48 hours. This rapid uptake signals a growing appetite for the developer's unique brand of mandatory two-player gameplay.
The success of Hazelight reinforces the commercial viability of the co-op genre. Other developers are taking notice, with Kepler Interactive preparing to enter the space with their upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, Orbitals. The recent success of titles like Peak, which sold 4.5 million copies in a month, further emphasizes the current industry trend toward multiplayer experiences.
Future Projects and Design Philosophy
With a solid foundation established, Hazelight Studios is currently developing its fourth, yet-to-be-announced game. In the meantime, the team has been sharing insights into their creative process. At the GDC Festival of Gaming 2026, Level Designer Hannes Gille revealed that the studio initially considered building Split Fiction entirely around its final stage mechanic. However, the team ultimately decided to reserve this novel element for a grand finale, a decision that helped shape the game's pacing and structure.
