High on Life 2 Ditches Exclusivity: Squanch Games Names PS5 as Lead Platform

A Strategic Shift for the Sequel

In a significant departure from the first title's release strategy, Squanch Games is launching High on Life 2 simultaneously on Xbox and PlayStation. CEO Mike Fridley confirmed that despite the previous Xbox exclusivity deal, the PlayStation 5 version has emerged as the studio's "lead platform" for the new installment.

The original High on Life debuted in December 2022 as a console exclusive for Xbox and PC, arriving on PlayStation consoles roughly seven months later in July 2023. Fridley explained that the decision to switch to a multi-platform launch for the sequel was a straightforward business choice based on sales performance.

Data-Driven Decision Making

Fridley noted that reviewing the sales figures from the first game made the choice to drop exclusivity an easy one. "Shockingly even after a delay on the Sony launch... it's still our lead platform," Fridley stated, adding that Steam closely follows PlayStation in unit sales.

He emphasized the financial efficiency of a unified launch, pointing out that the studio can now avoid the costs associated with running two separate marketing campaigns. By piggybacking off a single marketing push, the studio aims to maximize reach while reducing overhead.

Game Pass and IP Building

The sequel will still be available on Xbox Game Pass, a move Fridley acknowledges involves weighing the benefits of exposure against potential lost sales. While there is a concern about "cannibalization of sales," he believes the service is instrumental for franchise building.

"If your game's good and you want a bunch of people to play it, getting it on Game Pass is great," Fridley explained. The studio remains focused on establishing its IP and ensuring as many players as possible have access to the game.

High on Life 2 is set to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on February 13, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version scheduled for release on April 20.
