Indie Developer Cuts Ties with Microsoft
Independent game studio Speculative Agency has formally announced the return of all funding received from Microsoft and Xbox. The decision was made to align the studio with the 'No Games For Genocide' boycott, a movement calling on the games industry to pressure corporations regarding their alleged complicity in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Financial Risk and Ethical Integrity
The studio, currently developing the narrative deck-builder All Will Rise, acknowledged the significant financial risks involved in this decision. The funding was originally secured through a Microsoft developer acceleration programme deal signed in 2025. Breaking this contract means the team must now find alternative revenue sources to fill the budget shortfall and forfeits access to the Xbox player base.
In a statement, the developers revealed they debated the political efficacy of the boycott. However, they ultimately concluded that the urgency of the movement and its potential to effect change outweighed the commercial dangers. The studio emphasized that their game's themes of fighting corporate greed and ecocide required them to act consistently with their own narrative values.
A Call for Collective Action
Narrative director Meghna Jayanth, known for her work on 80 Days and Thirsty Suitors, clarified that Microsoft representatives were understanding of the request to break the contract. While exact financial details remain confidential, Jayanth stressed that the move demonstrates that developers are not powerless against large corporations.
She called on other independent studios, tech workers, and gamers to join the movement, suggesting that collective action is the only way to pressure corporate leadership. Consequently, the studio's ongoing Kickstarter campaign has become a more critical financial pillar for the project's completion.
All Will Rise is currently available as a demo on Steam.
