Instagram Phasing Out End-to-End Encryption for Direct Messages

Meta removes E2EE option from Instagram

Instagram users will soon lose the option to secure their direct messages with end-to-end encryption (E2EE). According to an update on the Instagram Help Center, spotted by PiunikaWeb, the feature will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026.

In a statement regarding the decision, Meta explained that the feature was seeing very low engagement. A company spokesperson noted that few users were opting into the security measure. Consequently, the conglomerate is directing users who wish to maintain end-to-end encrypted communication toward WhatsApp, another platform within its ecosystem.

Implications for privacy and safety

The removal of E2EE signifies a notable shift in data accessibility. By eliminating the encryption layer, Meta regains the technical ability to access the content of private messages. This change comes shortly after the company faced scrutiny regarding privacy concerns linked to its Meta AI smart glasses.

While Meta has not explicitly detailed the strategic reasoning, industry speculation suggests the move aligns with global regulatory pressures. Removing encryption facilitates the scanning of messages for illegal material, specifically Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). Without E2EE, the platform can more easily:

  • Proactively identify and flag illegal content.

  • Comply with legal requests for message data from authorities.

  • Act more effectively on user reports regarding harassment or abuse.

What users need to do

Users currently utilizing encrypted chats are advised to export their data before the May deadline. Instructions for downloading message history and shared media will appear in the app for affected chats. Additionally, users running older versions of Instagram may need to update the application to access these export features.
