The Game Developers Conference (GDC), a staple industry event running since 1988, is facing a notable absence of international talent this year. Developers from around the globe are choosing to stay home, citing an increasingly hostile environment at United States borders and fears regarding the current political climate.
A Climate of Fear
While the conference typically draws tens of thousands of professionals, many have decided that the career opportunities are not worth the personal risk. Reports of travelers being detained, having electronic devices searched, or facing aggressive questioning have become prevalent. For developers belonging to minority groups, or those with outspoken political views, the anxiety is particularly acute.
Emilio Coppola, Executive Director of the Godot Foundation, noted a widespread reluctance to travel. He explained that while safety concerns existed previously, the current political environment has made the risk unacceptable for many. The apprehension stems from a perception that border enforcement has become callous and unpredictable.
Political Scrutiny and Identity Concerns
The reluctance to travel is deeply intertwined with the policies of the current administration. Following the 2024 election, reports of expanded immigration crackdowns and scrutiny of tourists have intensified. Developers have expressed fear that their political speech, particularly regarding topics like the conflict in Gaza, could result in being turned away or detained.
Neha Patel, a freelance audio director, shared a harrowing experience from a previous trip where she felt compelled to lie about her employment status to avoid complications. Others, like game designer Jörg Friedrich, worry that their artistic work opposing autocracy could make them targets at the border.
Furthermore, transgender developers have raised specific concerns regarding their safety. With strict enforcement of identification matches, trans travelers fear profiling and potential mistreatment if their gender presentation does not align with their documentation.
Safety Measures and Local Concerns
Some studios attempted to mitigate risks for essential travel by providing legal briefings and safety protocols. However, these measures have not alleviated the broader anxiety. Additionally, concerns about safety extend beyond the airport; the state of downtown San Francisco, including issues related to homelessness and crime, has further discouraged attendance.
Despite GDC organizers implementing safety hotlines and security escorts, the consensus among many international developers is that the US is currently too volatile a destination. As a result, the industry is seeing a fracturing of its community, with professionals looking to virtual events or alternative international gatherings to replace the once-unmissable San Francisco event.
