Leaked Trailer Suggests Cancelled BioWare Mass Effect Would Have Been Called Mass Effect: Universe

A cancelled Mass Effect trailer appears to have leaked

An internal trailer for the unreleased next Mass Effect title has surfaced online after EA said it will close BioWare, the developer behind the Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Knights of the Old Republic franchises. The footage, if authentic, appears to be one of the most concrete glimpses yet of the studio's cancelled project.

Where the leak came from

The clip was shared on a Mass Effect subreddit by a user identified as Random_Hyabusa_Ninja and was later highlighted by a ResetEra contributor. Subreddit moderators said they could not confirm the file, but indicated it did not appear to be artificial-intelligence generated. Commentators also noted that it resembles an internal presentation, which could support the possibility that it came from someone with access to studio materials.

What the trailer shows

The leak suggests the cancelled game would have been branded Mass Effect: Universe. The sequence opens with a new protagonist arriving on a planet and discussing their military background with an asari. The footage then moves through a series of scenes depicting the character and their companions communicating, exploring different areas, and engaging in combat.

The trailer closes with a twist, as the asari figure appears connected to a larger conspiracy before Liara T'Soni is shown as part of the new team. The encounter becomes a setup, followed by a firefight, and the footage ends with the project's title and a 'coming soon' message, now a sharp reminder that the game will not arrive.

Why it matters

The leak gains additional weight because IGN previously reported that a trailer for the next Mass Effect had been prepared. Even if the footage only demonstrates in-engine visuals rather than final gameplay, its pacing, tone, and focus on the series' signature characters align with what fans expected from a new entry. For players who had hoped for another chapter in the franchise, the timing of the leak makes the news of BioWare's shutdown feel even more disappointing.

BioWare had been developing the project when EA confirmed the studio would close after more than 31 years of operation. While the full scope of the cancelled game remains unknown, the leaked trailer offers a striking, if bittersweet, look at a version of Mass Effect: Universe that may never reach the public.
