A trailer may have existed
Reports indicate that a Mass Effect 5 trailer was prepared before EA canceled the sequel and announced the closure of the BioWare development studio. The claim first surfaced in an online post from someone described as an EA employee, who said a trailer was ready months earlier. IGN says it understands a trailer was prepared for release.
What EA said
In a staff memo, Cam Weber and David Tinson explained that a small team had been working on early development of the next Mass Effect. They said the company decided not to continue the project and would close the associated studio space in Edmonton. The memo described BioWare as a legendary studio whose role-playing work helped define a genre.
Why the timing was surprising
The sequel was announced at The Game Awards in December 2020, when it was described as being in early production. Six years later, the project was still in early development, leaving fans and industry figures stunned by the abrupt end.
Studio closure and layoffs
According to Bloomberg, roughly 50 staff members were working on Mass Effect 5 when the decision was made. The cancellation follows Dragon Age: The Veilguard underperforming sales expectations in 2024. Reports say EA will cut about 400 jobs globally, or roughly 3% of its workforce, while its Austin studio is expected to remain open to support other EA projects.
Fan and staff reaction
The news arrived just before N7 Day, an annual fan celebration scheduled for November 7. Less than a year earlier, Mike Gamble, an executive producer on Mass Effect, had said the next game remained in development and that the studio was still committed to expanding the universe. He later acknowledged the disappointment to fans online.
Several former contributors also commented. Bestselling author Catherynne M. Valente said the team had been working on a strong game, while former cinematic supervisor Tony de Waal described the canceled project as having a level of player autonomy and choice that would have set it apart. He said the team had looked at recent role-playing successes and aimed to raise the series while staying true to the original trilogy.
What happens next
At present, no official trailer or new roadmap for Mass Effect 5 has been released. EA has not provided additional details beyond the memo, and fans are left with the possibility that a completed promotional build may never be shown to the public.
