Mega Crit Prioritizes Quality Over Deadlines for Slay the Spire 2

Developer Mega Crit has published a detailed roadmap for the Early Access version of Slay the Spire 2, outlining 17 planned updates ranging from new characters to alternate acts. However, the studio has deliberately avoided attaching specific release dates to these milestones, citing a commitment to development health and product quality.

In a recent newsletter, studio co-founder Casey Yano explained that the team prefers a flexible workflow over rigid scheduling. Yano emphasized that while the team is small, their approach allows for spontaneous creativity—such as unexpected dialogue interactions—without the pressure of public deadlines. The primary goal is to avoid what Yano termed "Sloppy Spire 2," ensuring the team does not produce uninspired work simply to meet a target.

Roadmap and Community Response

The announcement follows a recent wave of review-bombing on Steam regarding balance changes. Mega Crit acknowledged the feedback, noting that Early Access is designed for testing these adjustments. The roadmap includes several key features:

  • New Content: A new character and alternate versions of Acts 2 and 3.

  • Features: Steam Workshop support, additional languages, and a bestiary.

  • Polish: Ongoing bug fixes, audio improvements, and quality-of-life updates.

Currently, the game is expected to remain in Early Access for roughly one to two years. Yano encouraged players interested in testing experimental changes to utilize the game's beta branch, which receives patches more frequently than the main branch.
