Konami has officially stated that the multiplayer component originally included with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will not be part of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2. The publisher confirmed the omission on its website, noting that the specific version of Metal Gear Online launched in 2008 will not return alongside the single-player campaign.
The original Metal Gear Online was a bundled experience for the PlayStation 3 release, offering unique modes where one player could control Old Snake. Despite receiving post-launch content, the servers were shut down in 2012. While the publisher has not detailed the specific reasons for excluding the mode, bringing back the legacy infrastructure appears to have been deemed unfeasible.
Multiplayer Offerings Still Present
Despite the absence of MGS4's online features, the collection is not entirely offline. Konami confirmed that the port of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will feature fully functional online multiplayer. This includes the Co-Ops mode for two to four players and the competitive Versus Ops mode for up to six players. Additionally, local wireless play will be available for Nintendo Switch and the anticipated Switch 2 versions.
Visual and Technical Enhancements
While the MGS4 multiplayer is missing, the single-player experience is receiving several modern updates. According to a PlayStation.Blog post, the new version boasts improved internal resolution and increased frame rates. Customizable controls will also be implemented for both MGS4 and Peace Walker. The bonus Game Boy Color title, Ghost Babel, will include modern features such as screen filters and a rewind function, though its original two-player mode has been removed.
- Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2* is set for an August 27, 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo platforms. Players who pre-order will receive exclusive camouflage items, while those with save data from the first volume will unlock additional bonuses.
