Microsoft Mandates OneDrive for Clipchamp Video Editing on Windows 11

Published on 20 March, 2026

Microsoft has implemented a significant policy change regarding its built-in Windows 11 video editor, Clipchamp. The company now requires users to save their projects to OneDrive if they wish to continue editing them, effectively removing the option for local project management.

Previously, users enjoyed the flexibility of saving project files directly to their local hard drives. Under the new system, choosing local storage results in the project being archived. While these archived files remain on the user's device, they can no longer be opened or modified within the editor.

To resume work on a project, users must now ensure it is synchronized with their OneDrive account. Consequently, any new projects created within the app are automatically saved to the cloud by default. Reports indicate that while the project file requires cloud synchronization, the source media files—such as video clips and images—do not strictly require syncing, though the workflow heavily incentivizes cloud integration.

This move aligns with Microsoft's broader strategy of integrating cloud services into the Windows operating system, though it may frustrate users who prefer offline workflows or have limited internet bandwidth.
