Microsoft Rebrands Copilot in Windows 11 Notepad, Keeping AI Features Intact

Published on 14 April, 2026

Microsoft is changing how it presents artificial intelligence within Windows 11 applications. Recent updates to the Windows Insider Program indicate that the company is removing the "Copilot" brand from the Notepad app, though the actual AI features are not being removed.

The specific Copilot button previously found in the toolbar has been replaced by a generic writing icon. This new interface continues to provide access to AI-powered tools, including options to rewrite text, summarize content, and adjust the tone or formatting of documents. Furthermore, settings within the application have been updated; the menu formerly labeled "AI features" is now titled "Advanced features," allowing users to toggle these capabilities on or off.

The changes come after Microsoft announced intentions to improve Windows 11 later in the year by being more deliberate with its AI integration. While the company promised to reduce unnecessary branding, it did not state that AI features would be eliminated entirely. This distinction appears to be the root of current user dissatisfaction.

Many Windows users expressed disappointment on public forums, feeling misled by the initial announcement. Critics argue that simply renaming features without removing the underlying technology does not address complaints about AI being forced into the desktop experience. Microsoft appears to be attempting a middle ground, retaining its AI investments while attempting to reduce visual clutter, though it remains to be seen if this approach will satisfy the user base.
