Microsoft Scales Back Copilot Integration in Windows 11 to Combat AI Bloat

Published on 22 March, 2026

Microsoft announced on Friday that it is refining its approach to artificial intelligence in Windows 11 by scaling back the integration of its Copilot assistant. The company aims to improve the overall quality of the operating system by removing AI entry points from certain applications where they are deemed less essential.

The changes will specifically affect the Photos app, Widgets, Notepad, and the Snipping Tool. Pavan Davuluri, Executive Vice President of Windows and Devices, explained that the company is adopting a more intentional strategy regarding AI placement. The goal is to focus on experiences that are genuinely useful rather than saturating the system with features.

Addressing Consumer Pushback

This decision reflects a growing trend of consumer pushback against what many perceive as "AI bloat." While artificial intelligence remains a powerful tool, recent data suggests that users are becoming increasingly wary. A Pew Research study released this month indicates that 50% of U.S. adults are now more concerned than excited about AI, a significant increase from 37% in 2021.

Microsoft has faced specific challenges in this arena before. The company previously delayed the launch of its Recall feature for Copilot+ PCs due to privacy concerns and reportedly shelved other planned system-level integrations in File Explorer and Settings.

Broader System Improvements

Beyond the reduction of AI features, Microsoft is introducing several quality-of-life updates based on community feedback. Users will regain the ability to position the taskbar at the top or sides of the screen. Additionally, the update promises faster performance for File Explorer, enhanced controls for system updates, and improvements to the Widgets experience and Feedback Hub.

These moves suggest Microsoft is listening to its user base, prioritizing stability and utility over aggressive AI expansion.
