New Brunswick Blocks Data Center Development
The New Brunswick City Council has voted against a proposal to construct a data center within the Jersey-Sandford redevelopment area. During a meeting on Wednesday, council members decided to remove language that would have permitted data center development on the approximately 22-acre site, effectively mandating the creation of a public park instead.
Details of the Rejected Proposal
The contested plan involved a 27,000 square foot facility situated on the southeastern side of Jersey Avenue, between Sandford Street and Mitchell Avenue. While the region is recognized as a prominent hotspot for data center infrastructure, this specific project faced immediate hurdles from local stakeholders.
Community Opposition and Environmental Response
Public resistance played a pivotal role in the council's decision. Climate Revolution NJ, an environmental organization, coordinated the response against the proposal. A video released by the group highlighting the community's victory garnered over 300,000 likes on social media, with organizers framing the outcome as a successful stand against big tech and private equity interests.
The council's amendment to the redevelopment plan marks a significant shift in land use priorities for the area, favoring green space over industrial digital infrastructure.
