The upcoming Virtual Boy headset accessories for Nintendo Switch have been confirmed to support existing VR modes in Switch games, expanding their utility beyond the dedicated Virtual Boy app.
According to a report by Video Games Chronicle (VGC), both the full-sized replica headset and the cardboard version function with the VR modes introduced in titles such as Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. The accessories were originally announced for the Nintendo Classics: Virtual Boy app, which is scheduled for release on February 17.
Technical Functionality
Testing revealed that the new accessories operate on principles similar to the Nintendo Labo VR headset. By placing lenses over the Switch screen, the device creates a stereoscopic 3D effect using two images displayed simultaneously. This allows the hardware to leverage the console's existing motion-tracking capabilities to simulate a virtual reality environment.
Hardware Comparisons
VGC noted a distinct difference in user experience between the two headset models. The cardboard version is reportedly the preferred option for playing Switch VR titles, as it allows players to move their heads freely to interact with the game's motion tracking. Conversely, the full-sized Virtual Boy headset is designed to sit statically on a desk, which restricts the movement required for the immersive VR modes.
Additionally, while the full-sized headset includes a red filter to emulate the original 1995 hardware aesthetic, this filter is removable. This allows players to experience the modern Switch VR modes in full color rather than the monochromatic red of the classic system.
Future Compatibility
The report also verified that the VR feature remains intact in the Switch 2 Edition of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Players upgrading to the new console version will still be able to play through the entire adventure using the Virtual Boy accessory.
Both headsets are currently available exclusively through the My Nintendo Store.
