OpenAI has announced the discontinuation of Sora, its video-generation application, signaling a strategic pivot in the company's research priorities. While the initial announcement was sparse on details, the company later clarified that the move allows for a reallocation of computing resources toward "world simulation research" designed to advance robotics.
According to reports, Sora had become a financial and operational liability for the startup. Despite a strong start that saw 6.1 million downloads in November, user engagement plummeted to just 1.1 million recently. The disparity between waning popularity and the app's staggering $1 million daily operational cost forced OpenAI to reevaluate its resource distribution.
The decision appears to be part of a broader strategic tightening ahead of a potential initial public offering (IPO). Sources indicate that OpenAI is shifting its focus to developing a "superapp" capable of handling work-centric tasks, a move intended to compete more directly with rivals like Claude and Gemini.
