A New Contender in the Console-Style PC Market

A new gaming system named Playnix has entered the market, offering a Linux-based alternative for living room gaming. Priced at €1,139 including tax, the unit is designed to mimic the aesthetic and convenience of a home console while packing distinct PC hardware capabilities. The current Batch #2 offering includes the system, a 4K HDMI cable, and an 8BitDo Ultimate 2 controller.

Hardware Specifications and Performance

At the core of the Playnix system lies a six-core Ryzen 5 processor with a 65W TDP, paired with a Radeon RX 9060 XT graphics card. The GPU features 32 Compute Units and 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM, operating at a 150W TDP. The manufacturer claims this configuration is capable of achieving 4K resolution at 60 FPS in demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077, provided that FSR or XeSS quality presets are utilized.

Memory and storage configurations include 16GB of DDR4-3200 dual-channel RAM and a 512GB NVMe SSD. For users requiring more space, the chassis includes a secondary NVMe slot for easy expansion. The system is powered by a Flex 600W PSU and utilizes fans from Noctua and Thermalright to manage thermals.

Connectivity and Design

The system features a compact chassis measuring 320 x 247 x 64 mm. Despite its size, it offers extensive connectivity options, including Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5, and Gigabit Ethernet. Video output is handled by one HDMI 2.1 port and one DisplayPort 2.1, both supporting HDR and high refresh rates up to 4K 120Hz or 8K 60Hz. USB options are plentiful, providing users with one USB-C 3.1 port, two USB 3.0 ports, and four USB 2.0 ports.

Running on PlaynixOS, an Arch Linux-based distribution, the device positions itself as a highly customizable alternative to traditional consoles. As an EU-based seller, the company offers a two-year warranty and permits users to replace or upgrade internal parts within the system's power constraints.
