Pokémon Switch Ports Introduce Name Censorship, Ending a Childhood Tradition

Published on 01 March, 2026

Nintendo has updated the classic Pokémon experience for modern audiences by adding a profanity filter to the Switch ports of FireRed and LeafGreen. This technical change effectively ends a long-standing tradition where players could name their rival or protagonist using inappropriate words, resulting in humorous in-game dialogue.

Previously, players enjoyed the freedom of assigning nearly any name to their characters, often leading to memorable encounters with NPCs like Professor Oak. However, the new Switch version actively blocks common swear words. Attempts to input specific four-letter expletives or mild terms like "crap" now result in the game rejecting the entry, with Professor Oak suggesting bland alternatives.

Inconsistent Filtering

Interestingly, the censorship system appears to be inconsistent. While harsher language is scrubbed, players have discovered that words such as "hell," "damn," "butt," and "fart" remain permissible. Creative variations, such as "Buttfac" (a compromise due to character limits), also slip through the restrictions. The filter marks a distinct shift from the unmoderated text inputs of the 90s and 00s, though determined players are still finding loopholes to express their inner child.
