Pragmata Developers Explain How 'Fake AI' Logic Shapes Its Surreal New York Setting

Published on 26 March, 2026

Capcom’s upcoming sci-fi adventure Pragmata is set to launch this April, and new details reveal a fascinating design philosophy behind its primary setting. Following a recent press event, Director Cho Yonghee and Producer Naoto Oyama opened up about the game's unique "fake New York" aesthetic, explaining how the team utilized the concept of AI generation to build a world that is both familiar and deeply unsettling.

An AI-Generated Illusion

The game’s stage is conceptualized as a version of New York generated by artificial intelligence. According to Cho, this premise allows the developers to ground players in a recognizable reality while simultaneously subverting their expectations. The goal was to create a city that feels relatable due to famous landmarks, yet visibly "distorted" to prevent it from being mistaken for the real world.

Visual anomalies are at the heart of this design. The developers implemented what they describe as "setting errors," manifesting as streets that invert unexpectedly or taxis that appear sliced in half. Players will encounter buses sprouting out of walls and vehicles sinking into the floor, creating an atmosphere that mirrors the "uncanny valley" often associated with AI-generated imagery.

Balancing Glitch and Gameplay

While the in-game narrative suggests an AI origin for these distortions, Producer Naoto Oyama clarified that human artists painstakingly handcrafted every glitch. This presented a unique challenge: the distortions needed to be visually distinct enough to feel unique, but not so bizarre that players would mistake background elements for gameplay puzzles.

Cho noted that if the environment becomes too abstract, players might incorrectly assume hidden mechanics are at play. The team worked diligently to ensure the "errors" contributed to the atmosphere without obstructing navigation. Oyama confirmed that player feedback has so far indicated the paths remain clear despite the visual chaos.

Beyond the distorted cityscape, the game will feature other global locations, blending elements from places like Madrid and Seoul into its environments.

Pragmata is scheduled for release on April 17, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam). A version for Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch shortly after on April 24.
