Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that an upgraded version of its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology will begin rolling out globally to PS5 Pro users in the coming weeks. This AI-driven upscaling library, designed to boost effective resolution and image quality, represents a significant evolution in the console's technical capabilities.
The first title to utilize this advanced technology is Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem, which launches today. According to Masaru Ijuin, Senior Manager of Engine Development at Capcom, the new PSSR allows for enhanced visual fidelity, particularly in rendering complex details like individual hair strands and textures that are traditionally difficult to upscale. The game leverages an upgraded RE Engine to provide deeper immersion, with the new upscaling solution maintaining high frame rates alongside these visual improvements.
Project Amethyst and AMD Partnership
The algorithm powering the updated PSSR stems from "Project Amethyst," a strategic partnership between Sony and AMD. While PC gamers have already seen benefits from this collaboration through AMD's FSR 4 technology, the PS5 Pro version includes an additional six months of specific refinement. Sony notes that this new approach fundamentally changes both the neural network and the overall algorithm used for image processing.
System-Wide Rollout in March
While Resident Evil Requiem serves as the debut showcase, a broader implementation is scheduled for March. A forthcoming system software update will introduce an "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" option in the PS5 Pro settings. Once enabled, this feature will apply the upgraded AI processing to the existing library of over 50 games that currently support PSSR, potentially offering noticeably crisper graphics across a wide range of titles.
