Weighing Anonymity Against Security
The proposed verification methods vary in intensity. Huffman highlighted "lightweight" options such as Face ID and Touch ID, which leverage biometric data to confirm a human presence without requiring a government ID. He noted that these methods prove a person is present because they require physical interaction, such as a touch or a glance. Alternatively, the platform is considering relying on third-party services that can verify identity without storing personal data.
The challenge lies in balancing these security measures with Reddit's core value of anonymity. Huffman acknowledged that while the platform does not need to know a user's name, it must find a way to confirm they are a person. He described this as an evolving process, stating, "Part of our promise for our users is we don't know your name but we do want to know you're a person."

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian expressed surprise at the direction but admitted that action against fake content is necessary.
