Sony Issues Automatic Refunds for Highguard Following Game Shutdown

Published on 19 March, 2026

Sony has begun issuing automatic refunds to PlayStation players for in-game currency purchases made in Highguard, following the game's permanent shutdown. Players on Reddit have reported receiving funds back without needing to file requests, signaling a proactive move by the platform holder following the title's abrupt removal from the market.

A Short-Lived Launch

Highguard launched on January 26 and initially garnered significant attention, peaking at nearly 100,000 concurrent players on Steam. However, this momentum was short-lived, as the player base dwindled rapidly in the subsequent days. Developer Wildlight Entertainment attempted to salvage the situation by releasing updates, including a shift from a 3v3 format to a 5v5 mode based on community feedback.

Despite these efforts, the studio faced layoffs shortly after launch and confirmed the game would cease operations on March 12. The closure has drawn inevitable comparisons to Concord, another live-service title backed by PlayStation that was taken offline due to low player engagement.

Uncertain Future for Wildlight

While refunds are currently processing for PlayStation users, similar reports have not emerged from Steam or Xbox platforms. The future of Wildlight Entertainment appears bleak; the company's LinkedIn page has been deleted, and its official website is no longer accessible. Furthermore, studio head Chad Grenier has updated his LinkedIn profile to indicate his tenure at Wildlight will conclude in March 2026, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the developer's status.
