Sony Shuts Down Bluepoint Games: The Failed Live-Service Pivot and Rejected Bloodborne Pitch

Published on 28 February, 2026

Sony Group Corp. has officially shuttered Bluepoint Games, the Austin-based studio renowned for its high-quality remakes of titles such as Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. The closure results in the loss of roughly 70 jobs, concluding a five-year tenure under the PlayStation banner during which the studio failed to launch a new title of its own.

A Strategic Misalignment

The road to closure began with a strategic pivot towards live-service gaming. Following Sony's acquisition, Bluepoint was tasked with developing a live-service title set within the God of War universe. The project, which reportedly involved the character Atreus navigating Hades, was intended to be a platform for ongoing content and monetization.

However, the initiative faced significant hurdles. Bluepoint, historically recognized for technical artistry and engineering rather than game design, struggled to adapt to the complexities of a live-service model. Despite assistance from Sony Santa Monica, progress stalled, leading to the project's cancellation in January 2025.

The Bloodborne Obstacle

With their original project scrapped, Bluepoint sought to return to their roots by pitching a remake of the beloved 2015 classic, Bloodborne. Sources indicate that while financial projections for the remake were sound, the project was blocked by FromSoftware. The Japanese developer, led by Hidetaka Miyazaki, reportedly preferred to handle the property internally but lacked the bandwidth, resulting in a refusal to outsource the IP.

Subsequent pitches, including an updated version of Shadow of the Colossus and a Ghost of Tsushima spinoff, were also rejected by Sony. The publisher cited resource constraints and a lack of strategic fit for the rejections.

The Final Decision

By February 2025, Bluepoint had gone over a year without a confirmed project. The situation culminated when Sony announced a remake of the original God of War trilogy without involving Bluepoint. One week later, the studio was informed of its closure. Internal assessments concluded that the studio was no longer viable as an independent developer, and no suitable internal partnerships could be arranged.

The closure marks a somber end for a studio celebrated for its technical prowess, particularly following the critical success of the Demon's Souls remake, which served as a flagship launch title for the PlayStation 5.
