The 'Honk' System and Claude AI
Central to this transformation is an internal platform known as 'Honk.' This system integrates generative AI, specifically utilizing Claude Code, to facilitate remote and real-time software deployment. Söderström illustrated the efficiency of the tool by describing a scenario where an engineer can instruct the AI to fix a bug or add a feature via Slack while commuting. By the time the engineer arrives at the office, the updated app version is ready for review and production merge.
This accelerated pipeline has yielded significant results. Throughout 2025, Spotify successfully shipped over 50 new features and changes to its streaming application. Recent launches bolstered by this technology include AI-powered Prompted Playlists, Page Match for audiobooks, and the 'About This Song' feature.
Building a Proprietary Data Advantage
Beyond development speed, Spotify is leveraging AI to build a unique dataset that differentiates it from competitors relying on public Large Language Model (LLM) data. Söderström emphasized that music-related queries are often subjective rather than factual, varying widely by geography and personal taste. By capturing this nuanced data, Spotify aims to create a proprietary asset that cannot be easily commoditized by third-party AI models.

Regarding the presence of AI-generated music on the platform, Spotify confirmed a balanced approach. The company allows artists and labels to document the use of AI in track metadata but remains vigilant in policing the platform for automated spam content.
