Widespread Moderation Failures
Steam, the world’s largest PC gaming platform, is facing serious allegations regarding its inability to curb abuse and bigotry. Despite having clear community guidelines prohibiting discriminatory language, developers and players report that the platform has become a hostile environment. Sources indicate that marginalized creators, particularly those in the LGBTQ+ community, are frequent targets of harassment that moderation teams often clear rather than remove.
Developers Struggle for Recourse
Game designer Nathalie Lawhead shared a two-year struggle to remove reviews containing antisemitic remarks and references to personal trauma. After reporting the content, Steam moderators initially cleared the reviews, with support staff claiming that removing unverified statements could be viewed as censorship. The content was only removed after Lawhead contacted a Valve employee directly outside of standard support channels, highlighting a flawed reporting ecosystem where cleared content cannot be re-reported by the same user.
Curators and Review Bombing
The report also highlights the role of Steam Curators in amplifying toxicity. Self-appointed taste-makers have organized campaigns against games featuring diverse characters or perceived political stances. For instance, the developer of Coven noted that a curator campaign led to a flood of negative reviews unrelated to the game itself. In another case, Caravan SandWitch was targeted simply for featuring queer characters. Steam support reportedly dismissed these off-topic attacks, stating they did not meet the strict definition of trolling.
The Monopoly Dilemma
With nearly 42 million concurrent users, Steam remains essential for game developers, effectively holding a monopoly on PC gaming visibility. This dominance leaves creators with little choice but to remain on the platform despite the hostile conditions. Valve has not commented on these moderation practices, leaving developers to either fund their own moderation teams or endure the abuse to maintain their livelihoods.
