Law enforcement officials in San Francisco have detained a suspect accused of targeting OpenAI CEO Sam Altman with an incendiary device. The incident occurred early Friday morning, involving an attack on Altman's residence and subsequent threats directed at the OpenAI headquarters.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers responded to a call in the North Beach neighborhood at approximately 4:12 a.m. regarding a fire investigation. Upon arrival, authorities discovered that an unknown male had thrown a destructive device at a residential gate, resulting in a fire. The suspect fled the scene on foot.

Roughly an hour later, police received reports of a male subject threatening to burn down a building on the 1400 block of Third Street, the location of OpenAI's offices. Officers recognized the individual from the previous description and immediately detained him. The suspect has been identified as a 20-year-old male, with charges currently pending.

OpenAI's Response

OpenAI released a statement confirming the incident and the subsequent arrest. The company expressed relief that no injuries occurred and commended the police for their rapid response.

"Thankfully, no one was hurt," the company stated. *"We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe."

Altman Addresses Incident Publicly

Sam Altman took to his personal website to address the attack directly. Breaking from his usual preference for privacy, the CEO shared a photograph of his husband and son. He explained that he hoped sharing a personal glimpse of his family might humanize them to potential attackers and dissuade future violence.

"I love them more than anything," Altman wrote. "Normally we try to be pretty private, but in this case I am sharing a photo in the hopes that it might dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house, no matter what they think about me."

The investigation remains open and active as authorities work to determine the motive behind the attacks.
