This represents a 17% decrease compared to the same period last year and marks a continuation of a worrying trend for the EV giant.
Record Lows and Shifting Sales
According to reports from Motor Intelligence, the start of 2026 has been particularly challenging for the manufacturer. The recent sales figures follow a disappointing December 2025, which was recorded as the company's weakest performance in four years. Interestingly, the Cybertruck model constituted a significant 72% of the automaker's January sales, despite the model itself experiencing a massive 48.1% decline in sales volume throughout the previous year.
Economic Headwinds Curb Consumer Interest
The slump is not entirely isolated to one brand; the broader EV market is feeling the pressure of economic changes. The expiration of the $7,500 federal tax credit in late 2025 resulted in effective price hikes for electric vehicles across the board. Consequently, the industry saw a near 30% dip in volume in January. A recent Deloitte survey highlights the consumer sentiment shift, suggesting that only 7% of US car buyers are currently considering an EV for their next purchase. While manufacturers have attempted to introduce more affordable trims to entice buyers, these measures have yet to reverse the downward trajectory.

While the Model Y continues to perform well in specific regions like California, Tesla's overall market share is facing intense pressure from international rivals. Chinese automaker BYD has now overtaken Tesla as the world’s leading EV seller. In response to sliding demand and changing market dynamics, the company has reportedly discontinued its Model S and Model X product lines.
