The Elder Scrolls Online Unveils Ambitious Roadmap: Underwater Exploration, Naval Combat, and New Seasonal Model

Published on 01 April, 2026

ZeniMax Online Studios is fundamentally changing the trajectory of The Elder Scrolls Online (TESO) as it moves beyond its traditional expansion model. Following the conclusion of the "Chapter" format with 2024's Gold Road, the developer is pivoting to a seasonal structure designed to deliver content more flexibly and frequently.

Season Zero and Gameplay Overhauls

The new era begins April 2 with Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk. This limited-time event introduces the Night Market in the Oblivion realm of Fargrave, where players can earn a free player home and engage in PvE gauntlets. A major quality-of-life addition accompanying this season is the introduction of four difficulty tiers for overland content. Inspired by titles like Diablo 4, this system allows players to choose their preferred challenge level for open-world activities, ensuring that veteran players can find suitable challenges in standard zones.

On the competitive front, the Veterancy PvP system is being introduced to rework progression, offering exclusive cosmetic rewards to players who dominate in player-versus-player zones. Additionally, the development team is reducing friction in the gameplay loop by implementing faster mount training, UI-based skill respecs, and significant upgrades to inventory and furnishing limits.

Future Content: Thieves Guild and Experimental Features

Looking ahead to the summer, Season One will focus on the Thieves Guild. The update features a narrative set in a visually refreshed Glenumbra zone and includes a storyline involving the Daedric Prince of Madness, Sheogorath.

In a surprising departure from traditional MMORPG mechanics, ZeniMax is introducing experimental gameplay modes. The Sage's Vault offers a puzzle-focused, roguelite experience for parties, while future updates will introduce full-blown naval combat and underwater exploration. The latter allows players to traverse the sea floor and engage in combat, adding a new dimension to the game's exploration.

Solo Dungeons and Return to Skyrim

Addressing player feedback, the team is converting existing group content into Solo Dungeons. The first batch, including March of Sacrifices and Moon Hunter Keep, will be rebalanced for single players in 2026. Furthermore, the first base-game Trial since launch, the Crimson Veldt, is in development.

In a major announcement for long-term fans, the developers teased a return to Skyrim in early 2027. Unlike previous visits, this will feature a previously unseen area of the iconic region, reshaped by in-game weather events.

Cross-Play and Availability

Cross-play and cross-progression have been confirmed but are not expected to launch until 2027 due to technical complexity. All future playable content under the seasonal model will be free, though previous DLC remains paid.

The Elder Scrolls Online is currently available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5, with the title joining PC Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere on June 2.
