Uber Expands Women Preferences Feature Nationwide to Enhance Rider Safety

Published on 10 March, 2026

Uber has successfully launched its 'Women Preferences' functionality across the United States, a move designed to prioritize safety and comfort for women using the platform. This nationwide expansion allows women riders to select a 'Women Driver' option when booking a trip, while also enabling female drivers to prioritize ride requests from women.

A Strategic Global Rollout

The feature, initially tested in major markets including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit, is now accessible nationwide as of March 9, 2025. Beyond the U.S., the company has significantly widened the feature's reach. It is currently available to drivers in more than 40 countries and to riders in seven specific nations, such as Germany, France, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Spain, and Portugal.

Camiel Irving, VP of Operations for the US and Canada, emphasized that the development was driven by extensive testing and user feedback. The company refined the technology by analyzing real-world behaviors in international markets like Germany and France before bringing it to a wider audience.

Balancing Choice and Convenience

While the new setting offers a layer of reassurance, Uber has implemented safeguards to ensure it does not drastically inconvenience users. If the wait time for a female driver becomes excessive, the app will still present the option to match with any available driver to ensure a timely pickup.

This initiative is not entirely new for the ride-sharing giant. Uber first introduced a version of this gender-based preference in 2019 following legislative changes in Saudi Arabia that allowed women to drive. The current global expansion represents a significant evolution of that initial pilot, aiming to provide greater flexibility and confidence for women on the road.
