Ubisoft and Valve Back Community Edition for Dark Messiah; RTX Lite Testing Begins

Published on 11 March, 2026

A significant development has emerged for the classic title Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, as a dedicated modding team has announced the creation of a Community Edition. This project, which has secured official approval from Ubisoft and technical support from Valve, aims to port the game to a modernized version of the Source 1 SDK. This shift promises enhanced stability and direct code access, allowing the community to fix long-standing issues and integrate various mods more effectively without relying on unstable workarounds.

RTX Lite Enters Public Testing

Simultaneously, the team has released the Lite Edition of their RTX remastering project for public testing. The mod now features a first pass on every environmental texture in the game, alongside an implemented AgX tone mapper designed to preserve the game's original artistic direction. The update also successfully restores the Dark Vision spell with new ray-tracing interactions. The developers are actively seeking feedback on texture behavior and lighting interactions as they refine the visual experience.

Advanced SDK and Gameplay Features

The modding tools have received a substantial overhaul with the Advanced SDK update. Key improvements include the ability to create fully custom weapons, armors, and items. Additionally, the team has introduced a new "Runes" system, replacing the previous relic skill-point rewards with mutators that alter gameplay difficulty and mechanics. This system is currently available in the Restoration Mod's campaign menu.

Project Roadmap and Recruitment

Development is ongoing for several other ambitious projects. A co-op mod is undergoing a code refactor to improve stability, and the team is repurposing the Alien Swarm TileGen system to create a procedural dungeon generator. The developers have issued a call for assistance, specifically requesting help from mappers to test the new dungeon generation rules, as well as translators to support localization efforts for the updated mod launcher.
